A Meat Transport Permit is required by any person who transports meat or meat products from a slaughterhouse to a retail outlet, butchery, hotel, restaurant, or processing facility in Kenya. The permit is issued by the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) under the Meat Control Act (Cap 356). It certifies that the meat being transported originates from a licensed slaughterhouse, has been inspected and passed as fit for human consumption, and is being handled hygienically during transit.
The permit is issued per consignment and must accompany the meat throughout transit. Transport vehicles carrying meat must meet DVS hygiene standards and, for larger quantities, should be refrigerated or appropriately insulated.
