A Slaughterman Licence is required by any individual who carries out the slaughter of animals for commercial purposes in a licensed slaughterhouse in Kenya. The licence is issued by the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) under the Meat Control Act (Cap 356) and the associated Slaughterhouse Regulations. It ensures that persons conducting slaughter operations are trained in humane slaughter methods, meat hygiene, and food safety.
The licence must be renewed annually and the holder is required to work only within a licensed slaughterhouse. Both local slaughterhouses (regulated by county governments) and export-grade slaughterhouses (regulated by DVS nationally) require their slaughtermen to be individually licensed.
