Finance Trust Bank (FTB) has one of the most distinctive histories among Uganda’s financial institutions. Founded in 1984 as the Uganda Women’s Finance and Credit Trust, it was created specifically to extend financial services to low-income Ugandans, especially women — a mission still reflected in the fact that roughly 60% of its customers are women. The institution transitioned through several regulatory tiers before being licensed as a full commercial bank in November 2013. Its head office is at TWED Plaza, Lumumba Avenue, Nakasero, Kampala.
Important regulatory update: Following capitalization challenges and a prolonged, ultimately unclosed acquisition process involving Nigeria’s Access Bank Group, the Bank of Uganda approved Finance Trust Bank’s transition from a Tier I commercial bank to a Tier II credit institution, effective 1 April 2026. This means FTB currently operates as a licensed credit services company rather than a full commercial bank, though it continues to run its existing branch network.
FTB has historically maintained around 34 interconnected branches, with roughly 70% located in peri-urban and rural areas — including one branch on the Kalangala Islands. The table below presents a representative selection of these branches.
