This article is a guide on how to place a caveat on a motor vehicle in Kenya. A caveat is a temporary restriction on a motor vehicle to prevent it from being transferred. It can be placed in all types of vehicles by government investigative agencies or the original owner of the vehicle.

Grounds for Placing a Caveat on a Motor Vehicle

  • Valid court orders, request by the registered owner citing grounds for placing the caveat.
  • Request by relevant government agencies such as DCI, KRA and EACC (this is only placed for a period of 14 days as the investigative agencies seek a court order).
  • The legal spouse of the registered owner of the motor vehicle accompanied by a marriage certificate on the event of cases such as death, insanity or incapacitation.
  • An appointed legal representative like an advocate acting on behalf of the owner.
  • An appointed administrator of property where the registered owner is deceased.
  • Administrative caveat arising from a suspected fraudulent transaction. This is authorised by the National Transport and Safety Authority.

This is a guide on how to apply for a road service license in Kenya. All operators of public service vehicles are required to have road service licenses to operate on Kenyan roads. The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is the body that issues the licenses to PSV operators.

Road service licenses are meant to ensure road safety, route management, regulatory compliance, conflict resolution, revenue collection and to promote fair competition.

Requirements to Apply for a Road Service License

  • Original copy of logbook.
  • Original copy of vehicle inspection report.
  • Original copy of speed governor compliance certificate.
  • Original copy of vehicle identity certificate.
  • Driver must have a valid PSV badge.
  • The motor vehicle must have undergone inspection and passed.
  • Copy of the original ID of the owner.

How to Apply for a Road Service License in Kenya

1. Go to the NTSA service portal https://serviceportal.ntsa.go.ke/.

2. Log in using your e-citizen credentials.

3. Go to driver testing and licensing.

4. Attach the vehicle that you are applying license for. Click on ‘attach vehicle’ option then enter vehicle registration number or chassis number and click on search button. If the vehicle is found, indicate the sitting capacity then submit.

5. On the left hand side of the screen, click on my vehicle. A list of your vehicles will be displayed.

6. Click on ‘apply RSL’ then proceed to fill all the mandatory fields.

7. Click on next.

8. Proceed to make payment.

9. After you have successfully made the payment, submit the application for processing.

10. Wait for approval from NTSA. You will receive a notification upon successful processing of the license.

11. You can go ahead to print the license online.

Charges depend on the carrying capacity (cc) rating of the motor vehicle. The charges are as follows;
