An insurance surveyor assesses, inspects, and evaluates risks prior to the placement of insurance cover, helping insurers determine appropriate terms, conditions, and premium rates. Surveyors may operate in marine, property, engineering, agricultural, and other risk lines. In Kenya, insurance surveyors are licensed by the IRA as service providers under Section 150 of the Insurance Act, Cap. 487.

General Service Provider Requirements
All insurance service providers, including surveyors, must demonstrate that the volume of business likely to be available is adequate and that business will be conducted in accordance with accepted professional standards. A certified copy of the certificate of incorporation (or certificate of registration of a business name), and a curriculum vitae of the proposed Principal Officer, must also be submitted.
The draft Insurance Regulations 2025 propose raising the annual service provider fee — covering surveyors, investigators, risk managers, loss adjusters, motor assessors, and claims settling agents — from KES 3,000 to KES 10,000, representing a tenfold increase.
Regulated by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) under the Insurance Act, Cap. 487, Laws of Kenya.
