Citizen Band Radio Licence Fees / Charges

The Citizens Band (CB) Radio service in Kenya is regulated by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), the government body mandated to manage the radio frequency spectrum and ensure orderly development of the communications sector. For individuals and businesses seeking to operate CB radio equipment, understanding the licensing framework and associated costs is essential.

Licence Application Process

All applications for Citizen Band Radio licences are submitted to the Communications Authority of Kenya. The process begins with completing the Application for Individual Authority to use Citizen Band Radio License Form (CA-F-FSM-24), available on the CA website. Applicants must provide technical details about their equipment and intended use. The Authority reviews applications and, upon approval, notifies the applicant of the frequency fee to be paid in accordance with the approved Frequency Spectrum Fee Schedule.

Fee Structure

The Communications Authority of Kenya charges specific fees for Citizen Band Radio licences:

  • Application Fee: KES 1,200 per application (applies to each frequency application)
  • One-Time Frequency Fee: KES 2,000 per station

These fees are set according to the Frequency Spectrum Fee Schedule Effective July 2018 (with 2025 updates). The one-time frequency fee covers the operation of low-power radio apparatus in the 27 MHz band (26925 KHz to 27403 KHz).

Documentary Requirements

Applicants must submit:

  • Duly completed Application Form CA-F-FSM-24
  • Proof of payment of application fee (KES 1,200)
  • Technical specifications of the radio equipment
  • Applicant’s identification documents
  • Proof of equipment type approval from CA (if not already approved)

Regulatory Framework

The CA enforces strict regulations to prevent interference and ensure efficient spectrum usage. Operating CB radio equipment without a valid licence is illegal under the Kenya Information and Communications Act. The Authority conducts regular monitoring and may impose penalties for unlicensed operations, including equipment confiscation and fines.

The Communications Authority of Kenya has established a clear fee structure for Citizen Band Radio licences, with a modest one-time fee of KES 2,000 plus a KES 1,200 application fee. This pricing makes CB radio accessible for personal and business communications while ensuring proper regulation of the airwaves. Prospective users should budget for these costs and complete the application process through the official CA channels.
