What is a Unified Business Permit?
The unified business permit consolidates all licenses required for running a business within a county into one comprehensive document. Previously known as the single business permit, this authorization includes trading license, fire clearance certificate, advertising signage license, health certificate, and food hygiene license where applicable. The consolidation simplifies the licensing process by eliminating the need to visit multiple offices for separate permits.
County governments issue unified permits to streamline business compliance and reduce bureaucratic hurdles. The system allows entrepreneurs to apply for all necessary licenses through one application process. This integrated approach saves time and reduces costs associated with obtaining multiple separate licenses from different government departments.
The unified permit approach implements the County Government Act provisions requiring efficient service delivery to businesses. Each county determines specific requirements and fees based on local regulations and business environments. The permit remains valid for one calendar year from January to December and must be renewed annually before expiration.
Applicants must first register their businesses or companies with the Registrar of Companies. The business registration number is fundamental as permits cannot be issued to unregistered entities. Three passport photographs, certified copies of CR14 name reservation form, statement of particulars, and four copies of national identification card are required.
All businesses must obtain fire safety certification before permit approval. This requires at least one fire extinguisher and other safety equipment as recommended by fire safety inspectors. After inspection, businesses receive Fire Safety Certificates which are necessary for the unified permit. The fire safety component ensures premises meet minimum safety standards to protect employees and customers.
For businesses in the food industry including restaurants, bakeries, and beverage establishments, health certification is mandatory. Food handlers must undergo medical examinations and obtain health certificates. Premises must meet hygiene standards as determined by public health inspectors. These health requirements protect consumers from foodborne illnesses and ensure safe food preparation environments.
The application process involves visiting county ward offices to obtain application forms. After completing forms with accurate information and attaching all required documents, applicants submit everything to ward licensing officers. Physical inspections determine appropriate permit categories and fees. Once approved, permits are issued at county headquarters and must be displayed prominently at business premises.
